Gionee’s New Clamshell Smartphone Will Launch On March 29th

Gionee is one of many China-based smartphone manufacturers. Chances are you’ve heard of Gionee before, they’ve released a number of compelling devices thus far, and have participated in a number of tech trade shows as well. Gionee has unveiled their Elife E8 flagship last year, and they’ve also rolled out a number of big battery ‘Marathon’ handsets as well. That being said, a rather interesting Gionee-branded smartphone surfaced on Geekbench back in January, and that very same phone popped up on TENAA (China’s equivalent to the FCC) last month, read on.

The device in question is the Gionee W909, and this is actually a clamshell device, which is not exactly a form type we see that often anymore. As already mentioned, this handset has surfaced on both Geekbench and TENAA already, and the company has started sending invitations for the March 29th event. According to the source, Gionee plans to introduce the Gionee W909 at that event, and the invite itself is quite revealing as well. If the benchmark and TENAA listings are to believed, the Gionee W909 will feature two 720p (1280 x 720) displays, along with 4GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage (expandable up to 128GB via a microSD card). This device will be fueled by MediaTek’s Helio P10 64-bit octa-core processor, and two SIM card slots will also be a part of this package. The 16-megapixel snapper will be placed on the back of this smartphone, and a 5-megapixel shooter will be available up front. Android 5.1 Lollipop will come pre-installed on this phone, along with Gionee’s Amigo 3.1 UI on top of it. Keep in mind that it is possible Gionee plans to roll out Android Marshmallow instead of Lollipop here, we’ll see. The Gionee W909 measures 124.6 x 62.5 x 16.4mm, while it weighs 210 grams.

This device’s predecessor, the Gionee W900, is priced at 3,599 Yuan in China, and the Gionee W909’s specs are higher-end, of course. This basically means that the Gionee W909 will be more expensive than the W900, and it seems like its price might be around 4,000 Yuan. This means that the Gionee W909 won’t exactly be that affordable, but if you’re in a market for a clamshell smartphone, your options are quite limited.
