Apple launches iPhone SE, India price starts at Rs.39,000

Apple on Monday night made a "return" to its roots as it launched the iPhone SE at an event in San Francisco. However, before you rush to dump the iPhone 6S and take out your wallet to buy the "new" iPhone, stop -- the iPhone SE is not a replacement for the iPhone 6S. Instead it is an update to the iPhone 5S. It not only features a design that is similar to the two-year-old iPhone but also sports a 4-inch screen, which is smaller than the 4.7-inch display that is found on the iPhone 6S.

Update: Apple tells us that in its press release the price of the iPhone SE was erroneously mentioned as Rs.30,000. The India price is actually going to start at Rs.39,000. This means that iPhone SE is not the cheapest iPhone that Apple has launched in India. That distinction now remains with the iPhone 5C. Although, with global price of $399, it is the cheapest iPhone the company has launched in the world. Once again, to repeat, the price of the iPhone SE in India will start at Rs.39,000 and not Rs.30,000.
The iPhone SE with its starting price of Rs.30,000 (global price is $399) is Apple's cheapest ever iPhone in India. The lower than expected price means the iPhone SE has a potential to be a big hit in countries like India, where consumers lust after the iPhone but can't afford to spend Rs.50,000 on it. In comparison, the iPhone 5C was priced at over Rs.37,000 at the time of its launch in India.
Globally too this is the cheapest iPhone that Apple has ever launched. It is cheaper than even the iPhone 5C, the phone with plastic body, that was priced at $549 for 16GB version. The device is clearly targeted two types of customers -- those who are still clinging to the iPhone 5S because the iPhone 6S is "too big" and those in countries like India who find the big iPhones too expensive.
While in terms of form factor, the iPhone SE gives a nod to the past, it is a very powerful phone. Internally, it has a hardware that is mix what is found in the iPhone 6S and the iPhone 6. It is powered by the Apple A9 processor, which is incredibly powerful.
It also has co-motion processor, the same 12-megapixel camera that is inside the iPhone 6S and the features like always on Siri and the front display flash for selfies. The camera, in particular, is a surprise because the the iPhone 6S camera is the best that Apple has ever put in an iPhone. The fact that company is bringing the same camera to the iPhone SE shows that it is serious about meeting the challenge from phones like the LG Nexus 5X and the HTC A9 that cost less than Rs.30,000 and yet offer great set of features and performance.
The Apple iPhone SE will be available starting March 31 in select countries. India is not in the list of countries where the phone would go on sale on March 31 but Apple said that the phone would be available in India in early April.
At the same event where the company launched the new iPhone, it also announced a new iPad called iPad Pro 9.7. This is similar to the iPad Pro with the 12.9-inch screen that Apple had launched last year. But the size is more manageable although the hardware inside is equally powerful. The new iPad Pro also comes with the stylus, which Apple calls Pencil.
